How Do You Become a Foster Parent with MATRIX Foster Care Services?

Becoming a foster parent with MATRIX Foster Care Services involves a thorough process designed to ensure the safety and

well-being of children in care.

Here’s an overview of the fostering process:

Step 1: Initial Inquiry

The process typically begins with individuals or couples expressing interest in becoming foster parents. This can be done by contacting our office either by phone

Step 2: Information Session

Prospective foster parents are invited to attend an information session. These sessions offer an overview of the fostering process, requirements, and expectations, as well as an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the role of foster parents.

Step 3: Application

After attending the information session and deciding to proceed, prospective foster parents complete an application form. This application includes personal information, background checks, references, and details about the individual or couple’s readiness and suitability to become foster parents.

Step 4: Home Study

Once the application is submitted, a social worker conducts a comprehensive home study assessment. This involves visits to the prospective foster parents’ home to evaluate the living environment, assess family dynamics, discuss motivations for fostering, and determine the applicant’s ability to meet the needs of foster children.

Step 5: Training

Prospective foster parents are required to complete pre-service training as part of the licensing process. This training typically covers topics such as child development, attachment theory, trauma-informed care, cultural competency, behavior management, and legal aspects of fostering.

Step 6: Approval & Licensing

Upon successful completion of the home study assessment and pre-service training, your application will be reviewed to determine whether the prospective foster parents meet the requirements to be approved for fostering. If approved, the foster parents receive a license or approval letter, allowing them to provide foster care.

Step 7: Matching

Once licensed, foster parents are matched with children in need of care based on various factors, including the child’s age, needs, preferences, and the foster family’s strengths and capacity to provide appropriate care. Our agency facilitates the matching process and provides ongoing support to both the foster family and the child placed in their care.

Step 8: Placement & Support

When a suitable match is found, the child is placed in the foster home, and the foster family begins providing care and support according to the child’s individual needs. We offer ongoing support, guidance, and resources to assist the foster family in their role and ensure the well-being of the child.

Step 9: Review & Reassessment

Foster placements are periodically reviewed to assess the child’s progress, the suitability of the foster placement, and the ongoing needs of the child and family. Reassessments may lead to adjustments in the placement or additional support services as needed.

Throughout the fostering process, prospective foster parents receive comprehensive training, guidance, and support from our team to help them navigate the challenges and responsibilities of fostering and provide the best possible care to the children in their care.

The application process to become a foster parent generally takes 3-6 months from the start of the application to placing a child in your home.   You must be 21 years or older.

You’re not alone, our team will support you every step of the way!
